I was fortunate enough to be invited to join the Susan Mears Agency team both at the Cannes Film Festival and the Frankfurt Bookfair this year in my capacity as an aspiring director, screenwriter, and script editor. I have to say that I found both experiences electrifying exciting and transformative!
Cannes was a canvas of cinematic elegance, buzzing with excitement at the Palais des Festivals. Filmmakers, producers, and industry experts mingled, creating an atmosphere charged with creative energy. Networking sessions became opportunities for inspiration and collaboration, with every conversation holding the potential to shape my creative journey. In this industry, persistence is key. Some embraced my scripts with enthusiasm, recognising potential, while others posed thought-provoking questions, prompting me to delve deeper into the nuances of my storytelling ability.
Navigating this spectrum of responses became integral to the pitch process. Amidst pitches and feedback sessions, the true magic unfolded in collaborative alchemy. Each meeting and encounter brought fresh insights and I was amazed and grateful for the feedback I received on my pitches. The festival is truly a chance to meet with some of the greatest minds in the industry. I left with a quiver full of amazing industry contacts and some incredible offers to develop both my screenplays and others I was pitching with some seminal studios and directors.
